DESCRIPTION

ADT is offering a 15 Day Quilting Tour to Japan designed exclusively for quilters and fabric enthusiasts. This is our tenth quilting tour to Japan and we will strive for it to be the best tour available. And yes, there will be shopping lots of it, but the main focus is the quilting tour of Japan, led throughout by Tita  Leach, an experienced quilter, textile artist, dyer and teacher from Sydney. On the tour you will visit Yokohama, Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Lake Suwako, Takayama, Shirakawago, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima with many highlights Japan has to offer. The special features of this special interest tour include the Nippori Fabric Town in Tokyo, two days at the Quilt Time Festival in Yokohama 2019, the world renowned Ichiku Kubota Museum in Hakone, Kyoto Hands-on Experience Workshop of Yuzen paint, Kyoto Museum of traditional crafts, Japanese Cooking Class in Okayama and lots more.

ITINERARY

Day 01, 26 MAY: SYDNEY/MELBOURNE – SHANGHAI

Depart Sydney or Melbourne on China Eastern in the morning and arrive in Shanghai Pudong Airport in the evening. Upon arrival, you are transferred to hotel by airport shuttle bus.

Day 02, 27 MAY: SHANGHAI – TOKYO (B.D)

After breakfast, take a shuttle bus from hotel to the airport where you will take a flight from Shanghai to Tokyo. Arrive at Tokyo Narita Airport in the afternoon. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to a four star hotel in Tokyo for three nights.

Day 03, 28 MAY: TOKYO – NIPPORI FABRIC TOWN – EDO MUSEUM (B.D)

This morning you will be taken to visit the Nippori Fabric Town. The area is best known to tourists for its abundance of Buddhist shrines and traditional cemeteries. But for fashion designers, seamstresses, tailors, clothing creators, and anyone into crafts or DIY, Nippori is one of the coolest places in all of Japan. Afterwards visit Edo Museum.

Day 04, 29 MAY: TOKYO SIGHTSEEING – AIZOME (indigo dyeing) – TOKYO (B.L)

This morning after breakfast you will leave the hotel for a sightseeing tour of Tokyo. We will commence with a sightseeing tour of Tokyo which will include Asakusa Temple, a very popular Buddhist Temple built in the 7th century. We will pay a visit to the Amuse Textile Museum which has a good exhibition of Boro clothing which goes back as far as Edo period. Boro is the style of patched clothing used for many generations by overstitching and reuse. Return to Tokyo.

Day 05, 30 MAY: TOKYO – YOKOHAMA (B)

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Yokohama, the 2nd largest city of Japan by motorcoach to attend the exciting quilt show- Quilt Time Festival in Yokohama. Stay overnight at Yokohama.

Day 06, 31 MAY: QUILT TIME FESTIVAL IN YOKOHAMA (B)

After breakfast you will be transferred to the Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition Hall AB for the Quilt Time Festival in Yokohama. In the afternoon, you are transferred back to you hotel for overnight.

Day 07, 01 JUN:  YOKOHAMA – ICHIKU KUBOTA MUSEUM – MT. FUJI – FUJIKAWAGUCHIKO (B.L.D)

This morning, travel to Lake Kawaguchi. We will then make a special visit to the world renowned Ichiku Kubota Museum to view the Kimono collection done in the Tsujigahana method. We will also visit the Autumn Festival on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi, which has many traditional handicrafts, clothes and food on sale. After that, you will travel to Mt. Fuji. Climb up to the 5th station by coach, about 2300 meters above the sea level to enjoy the view of Mt Fuji and visit the Peace Park. Enjoy hot spring spa in your hotel in the evening.

Day 08, 02 JUN: ISAWA – LAKE SUWA – TAKAYAMA (B.L.D)

Proceed to visit Lake Suwa. After that we drive to Takayama. We will visit the Historical Government House (Takayama Jinya). The building served as The Tokugawa government's administrative building for 177 years (1692-1871). Of the 60 local government offices that were once spread throughout Japan, this is the only one still in existence. We will also visit Old Private Houses(Nationally Recognized Historical Building Preservation Area). The Town Village still stands on the east side of the Miyagawa River flowing through Takayama, and in the middle of it is Sanmachi, where Edo period houses remain. This district was designated as an area of Important traditional buildings by the Japanese Government.

Day 09, 03 JUN: TAKAYAMA – SHIRAKAWAGO GASSHO VILLAGE – KYOTO (B.L.D)

We will start with the visit to the Historic Villages of Shirakawagō and Gokayama, one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Shirakawago (White River Old District) is located in the village of Shirakawa. These villages are well known for their houses constructed in architectural style known as gassho-zukuri ("prayer-hands construction") style, which is characterized by a thatched and steeply slanting roof resembling two hands joined in prayer. The design is exceptionally strong and, in combination with the unique properties of the thatching, allow the houses to withstand and shed the weight of the region's heavy snowfalls in winter. Afterwards we will proceed to Kyoto.

Day 10, 04 JUN: KYOTO – OSAKA (B.D)

In the morning, attend hands-on experience workshop of Yuzen painting and then visit the Kyoto Museum of traditional crafts, which has a superb display of local handicrafts. Afterwards travel to Osaka and stay overnight in Osaka.

Day 11, 05 JUN: OKAYAMA COOKING CLASS – BULLET TRAIN – HIROSHIMA (B.L.D)

Attend a Japanese cooking class at Okayama in the morning. After lunch, you are transferred to train station to take a bullet train to Hiroshima. Stay overnight in Hiroshima.

Day 12, 06 JUN: HIROSHIMA – MIYAJIMA – PEACE PARK– HIROSHIMA (B.L.D)

After breakfast you will leave the hotel for a sightseeing tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima. You will visit the Itsukushima Shrine. Miyajima Island is the popular name of Itsuku-shima Island situated in Miyajima Town southwestern Hiroshima. It is a scenic sight in which the mountains, sea and red shrine buildings blend in harmony, and the entire island is designated as a historic site. It is one of the three most beautiful sites in Japan, along with Matsushima in Miyagi and Ama-no-hashidate in Kyoto. Next, visit Peace Memorial Park. The Genbaku-dome (The Atomic Bomb Dome) is the symbol of Hiroshima, the city that advocates peace in the world. It is located in Hiroshima and faces Hiroshima Bay in the Seto Inland Sea. It was originally the Hiroshima Industrial Promotion Hall built in 1915. While all structures vanished in the atomic bomb explosion, only this building miraculously remained standing. It was 6 August 1945 when the first atomic bomb in history was dropped on Hiroshima. Transfer back to your hotel.

Day 13, 07 JUN: HIROSHIMA – SHANGHAI (B.D)

After breakfast, you are transferred to airport for your flight to Shanghai Pudong Airport. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to hotel for the night. You are free at leisure to explore this exotic city on your own.

Day 14, 08 JUN: SHANGHAI – AUSTRALIA (B.L)

After breakfast, check out and travel to Zhujiajiao, a famous watertown, in a suburb of Shanghai city.  Zhujiajiao Water Town, also called Zhujiajiao Water Village, is well-known throughout the country, with a history of more than 1,700 years. Covering an area of 47 square kilometers (11,614 acres), the little fan-shaped town, being regarded as Shanghai's Venice, glimmers like a bright pearl in the landscape of lakes and mountains. Endowed with another elegant name - 'Pearl Stream' - the Zhujiajiao Ancient Water Town is the best-preserved among the four ancient towns in Shanghai. Unique old bridges across bubbling streams, small rivers shaded by willow trees, and houses with courtyards attached all transport people who have been living amidst the bustle and hustle of the modern big city to a brand-new world full of antiquity, leisure and tranquility. Afterwards you are transferred to Shanghai Pudong airport for your flight homeward to Australia. You fly overnight.


Day 15, 09 JUN: AUSTRALIA

Arrive in Australia in the morning and your unforgettable Japan quilting tour ends.

1. China Eastern Airlines international air-ticket, Sydney/Melbourne – Shanghai –Narita//Hiroshima – Shanghai – Sydney/Melbourne;

2. Airport tax and fuel surcharge (currently $390, subject to change);
